Learn to Swim Program
Step 2: Learn the Strokes

Now that you have completed the Learn to Swim Level 1 class and are comfortable in the water, you are ready to enjoy the benefits of swimming for exercise. This program will introduce you to the Olympic competitive strokes and techniques.

Class overview

Freestyle

Efficient and elegant arm stroke pull and recovery.

Body and leg alignment allowing you to slide gracefully through the water.

Breathing techniques, drills and proper inhaling and exhaling.

Flip turns and open turns.

Backstroke

Body and head position.

Rotation of your torso and shoulders along the head/spine axis.

The bent arm catch, pull and finish allows the large muscle groups to maximize leverage during the stroke.

Breaststroke

Timing and sequence of the pull, kick and glide. Sequence is key to the breaststroke.

You will learn the frog kick. We will modify this to use a dolphin or flutter kick as necessary.

This competitive stroke requires strong and quick arm strokes relying heavily on your upper pectoral and deltoid muscles.

Butterfly

The most difficult of all the strokes. This requires learning to bring your arms over while simultaneously undulating your body and using the dolphin kick. Large and small fins will be used to develop the feel and timing required.

Dolphin kick

We will use fins to assist the torso and legs to porpoise.

We will be using various types of training equipment; pull buoys, training fins, kick boards, parachutes and paddles. This equipment will be available for your use poolside.

Equipment you will need:

  • Swim suit

  • Swim goggles

  • If you swim with ear or nose plugs please bring them along
